40 CE credit hours required every 2 years — 40 may be earned with CE-Credit.com.
Applies To:
- New Jersey Social Workers
We currently offer more than 40 courses that are specifically approved by ASWB for New Jersey Social Workers.
We would like to have more courses available to NJSW. Chapter 44G (last revised 9/19/22) (13:44G-6.4 ( c) number 11) states that “Attendance at programs or courses approved by boards that license social work practice in other states: one credit for each hour of attendance is acceptable for NJ Social Workers.” However, the board webpage states that “Organizations that offer continuing education in New Jersey must have each course approved in advance by a formally recognized entity. Please consult N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6 for more information on Continuing Education regulations.”
We have many more courses approved in advance by other state social work boards, including New York State Dept Board of Social Work and Florida Board of Clinical Social Work; but currently it is not clear whether NJSWB will accept these approvals. We have reached out to the board multiple times for clarification regarding this matter, but have not received any response yet. We suggest you contact the the board for clarification. If you succeed in getting that clarification, please let us know!
All credits may be distance learning (online/homestudy) courses, but must be preapproved.
LCSWs – 40 credit hours, 5 of the 40 hours shall be completed in ethics and clinical practice. 20 of the 40 credits must relate directly to clinical practice. 3 of the 40 credits must be in Cultural Competence and 1 in prescription opioids.
LSWs – 30 credits, 5 of which must be related to ethics. 3 of the 40 credits must be in Cultural Competence and 1 in prescription opioids.
CSWs – 20 credits, 5 of which must be related to ethics. 3 of the 20 credits must be in Cultural Competence and 1 in prescription opioids.
All individuals licensed or certified by this Board must complete at least one credit of continuing education in topics concerning prescription opioid drugs.
In addition to our standard grievance policy, our approval for Social Workers in New Jersey includes this qualifier:
If the results of the grievance process are unsatisfactory, New Jersey social workers have the option to contact the approving entity, with an option to appeal to their licensing board.Board Contact Info
