CE REQUIREMENTSPTS: Each Physical Therapist with an active Hawaii license is required to obtain at least thirty (30) CE hours in each two-year license renewal period, by their license expiration date (December 31st of every even-numbered year).
The thirty (30) CE hours are required to be obtained as follows:
- At least twenty-four (24) CE hours in subjects related to either: The professional practice of physical therapy (which includes but is not limited to professional accountability, professional behavior, and professional development); or Patient/client management (which includes but is not limited to examination, evaluation, diagnosis, and prognosis; plan of care; implementation; education; and discharge)
- Two (2) CE hours in ethics, laws, and rules (jurisprudence), or some combination thereof. Note: the two (2) CEs must cover Hawaii’s laws and rules governing the practice of physical therapy. Eligible courses must be approved by the Hawaii Board of Physical Therapy. Please check the List of Board-Approved Continuing Competence on the Board’s website, updated for each biennium.
- Four (4) CE hours in life support for health care professionals; provided that such training shall be comparable to, or more advanced than, the American Heart Association’s basic life support health care provider course.
PTAS: Physical therapist assistants are not subject to continuing competence requirements.
FIRST TIME RENEWALS: If the initial license was issued less than twelve (12) months prior to the renewal date, no CE hours will be required for the first renewal period. If the initial license was issued more than twelve (12) months prior to the renewal date, the licensee shall be required to obtain fifteen (15) units of approved CE hours for the first renewal period.
-
GENERAL INFORMATIONAll subjects must be related to the professional practice of physical therapy in Hawaii. Therefore, if the Hawaii scope of practice does not allow the physical therapist to perform any techniques or modalities related to the class (e.g. dry needling), the course will not be accepted.
Each licensee is required to keep and maintain his or her continuing competence records for a period of seven (7) years after the course of activity concludes as the Hawaii Board of Physical Therapy (“Board”) may randomly audit a licensee’s CEs.
