About the Course

This section of a larger Surgeon General’s Report on mental health reveals the diverse effects of culture and society on mental health, mental illness, and mental health services. Examined in some detail are the culture of the patient, culture of the clinician, and the impact of racism and discrimination on the provision of effective mental health services. (Please Note: The questions for this course apply to Chapter 2 of the document. Chapter 2 begins on the document page of 23, which is the adobe page of 39.)

  1. To take a broad social perspective look at mental health across many cultural groups.
  2. To examine the role of the clinician in providing culturally appropriate mental health services.
  3. To develop a greater knowledge of the roles cultural differences play in the proper provision of mental health services.
