About the Course

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who provide services to or seek knowledge about the practice of individual and group play therapy. Whether unfamiliar or familiar with some of the concepts involved in this material, you can benefit from information in this course. Beginning with an overview that addresses multicultural concerns, a description of play instruments, and observational techniques, this practice-oriented book explains how to implement play therapy in schools, with solid advice on gaining acceptance from other staff members and administration. Covering both individual and group play therapy, it clearly describes proven approaches such as child-centered play therapy, Theraplay, sandplay, and art exercises. The thorough treatment of the subject combined with the contributors’ incomparable expertise makes this an essential volume for all mental health professionals working in schools.

Charles E. Schaefer, Ph.D.

Dr. Schaefer is Professor of Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. He is co-founder and Director Emeritus of the Association for Play Therapy, and founder and co-director of the Play Therapy Training Institute in New Jersey. Dr. Schaefer is the author/editor of over 50 books on play therapy and effective parenting, and has published 100 research articles. He is the co-ordinator of an International Play Therapy Study Group that meets each year in Wroxton, England. Dr. Schaefer maintains a private practice in Teaneck, New Jersey.
