About the Course

This article describes the collaboration between a group of researchers and the residents of several Alaska Native villages in which research on weight, nutrition, and health was conducted. The importance of collaboration is emphasized. The collaboration process – and the important lessons learned during the process – are described.

This course is recommended for researchers and others working with minority communities (particularly American Indian and Alaska Native communities) who intend to publish the findings from their work. The course is intended to help researchers and other professionals to (1) enlist the support of community members when preparing findings for presentation/publication, and (2) to present their findings in meaningful, culturally relevant ways. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Explain why community collaboration is important to research.
  2. Understand the difficulties inherent in collaboration between groups with different agendas, cultural backgrounds, and geographical locations.
  3. Describe strategies that can be used to overcome these difficulties.
  4. Recognize some of the methods and cultural images that were employed to make the study under discussion more relevant to community members.
