About the Course

This course provides comprehensive coverage of strategic interventions in many different kinds of crisis and trauma situations. Topics include clinical guidelines for hospitalizing persons in crisis, intervening in domestic violence, preventing suicide, assessing and treating trauma caused by rape, disaster and loss, and dealing with violence in the workplace.

This course is based on the book, Strategic Interventions for People in Crisis Trauma and Disaster created by Diana Sullivan Everstine, Ph.D. and Louis Everstine, Ph.D., M.P.H.

This course is recommended for mental health practitioners who want to expand their knowledge of strategies for helping clients cope with crises and trauma.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Articulate the definitions of crisis and trauma and explain how the two are differentiated.
  2. Identify and understand specific intervention strategies for several types of crises such as those involved in hospitalizing individuals, assessing risk of dangerousness, and intervening in domestic violence and/or abuse and neglect of children.
  3. Learn the basic principles of assessing and treating trauma in various kinds of situations, including sexual assault, disaster, and trauma in the workplace.
