About the Course

This course examines the most recent APA Guidelines for Psychologists in their work with Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual clients. Applicable for all mental health care professionals, these guidelines are intended as recommendations regarding therapists’ conduct and issues to be considered in their practice with these individuals. Offering rationales for these guidelines and their application, this course explores basic information and further references in the areas of assessment, intervention, identity, relationships, education, training and research.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Guidelines for Psychological Practice With Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Clients created by Division 44/Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns Guidelines Revision Task Force of the American Psycholgical Association in 2011.

Keith Gibson, Ph.D.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, and social workers who seek knowledge about the recommendations regarding their conduct and the issues to be considered in their work with Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual clients. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Define the key terms used in the areas of sexual orientation and gender identity.
  2. Discuss the rationales for and the use of the guidelines in assessment, interventions, and training.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of some of the most salient issues facing Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual individuals in their relationships, work environments, cultural institutions, and families.
  4. Explain how multiple categories of identify and difference - - such as class, race, ethnicity, culture, gender, age, and disability - - impact the life experiences of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual individuals.
