About the Course

Based on a qualitative study conducted with 13 master’s and doctoral level students, this course explores some of the negative effects a conflict-ridden supervisory relationship can have on trainees: extreme stress, power struggles, role confusion, and self-doubt. This course also explores the coping strategies used by trainees in the face of their highly conflictual relationships with their supervisors. Finally, this article identifies some of the components of a positive supervisory relationship and offers suggestions for training effective supervisors.

This course is recommended for psychologists, counselors, and social workers who act as supervisors for trainees of all levels and who seek knowledge about the most effective components of a positive supervisory relationship. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the multiple negative effects a conflictual supervisory relationship can have on trainees.
  2. Define and be able to cite examples of role conflict and role ambiguity.
  3. Identify the range of responses trainees may have to conflicts with their supervisors.
  4. Discuss the various ways both to prevent and also to address conflict in the trainee-supervisor relationship.
