This course is designed to provide practitioners with a clear and focused presentation of recent changes in both the DSM-5 and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) classification systems and as such serves as a useful supplement to both. Background material, criteria, and some treatment recommendations for new DSM-5 disorders are also addressed as are major changes appearing in the DSM-5 such as the replacement of the multiaxial system. This course also includes a list of ICD-9-CM (clinical modification) and ICD-10-CM codes to help facilitate coding for insurance reimbursement.

About the Author:
Lourie W. Reichenberg is a Master of Arts Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice. She also provides supervision to therapists who are working towards licensure. She co-authored the book, Selecting Effective Treatments, which focuses on evidence-based practices for all DSM-IV disorders. Ms. Reichenberg was formerly an adjunct professor at Marymount University.
This course is recommended for health care professionals, instructors, clinicians in practice settings, and office staff responsible for coding for insurance reimbursement. It is appropriate for use in graduate preparation courses for mental health care professionals as well as for practitioners in the mental health and allied fields. As this course is designed as a supplement to the DSM-5 and ICD-9/ICD-10 classification systems, participants would benefit from prior knowledge concerning these systems.
Identify and describe broad changes represented in the publication of DSM-5 including, but not limited to the nonaxial system and the dimensional approach to diagnosis.
Recognize and describe the reclassification of disorders as well as those disorders and specifiers new to the DSM-5 compared to the DSM-IV.
Identify and discuss implications for diagnosis and treatment resulting from changes in classification areas.
Describe emerging assessment measures, cultural formulations, conditions for further study, and alternative diagnostic models included in the DSM-5.
