About the Course

This course provides a practical, straightforward, and readable summary of changes from the previous edition of the DSM by focusing on clinical utility and counselor practice implications. Another focus of the authors is to ensure readers understand what these changes mean to them and how they can be applied in day to day practice. In order to enhance efficiency, course materials highlight the changes that relate to disorders counselors most commonly treat. Emerging diagnostic trends, developmental considerations, the diagnostic interview, updated coding processes, the diagnostic interview, and culturally informed assessment are also presented. Overall, the material provided in this course is a highly readable and timely resource to clinical practice.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about changes contained in the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify the goals of the DSM-5 revision process as well as the structural modifications accompanying that process in order to apply them to day to day clinical practice.
  2. Identify DSM-5 changes and implications involving mood, anxiety, and stressor-related concerns.
  3. Identify DSM-5 changes and implications involving addictive, impulse-control, and specific behavior-related concerns.
  4. Identify DSM-5 changes and implications involving diagnoses commonly made by other professionals.
  5. Identify future trends regarding additional changes and their practice implications for counselors.
