About the Course

The course “Trauma Informed Approach: A SAMHSA Model in Custody” will: a) explore the history behind the concept “Trauma Informed Approach” (TIA) b) its guiding principles, c) the different types of traumas research has identified along with their symptomatology d) intervention styles necessary to promote resiliency and e) suggestions on how to implement the TIA model in a correctional environment. The course concludes by addressing the unique challenges of implementing TIA in a correctional setting and offers suggestions on how to address these. This course is also an educational tool as it provides a training format easily adaptable to any correctional institution.

This course is based on the book, Trauma Informed Approach: A SAMHSA Model in Custody created by Selma De Jesus-Zayas, Ph.D. in 2017.

Selma De Jesus-Zayas, Ph.D.

Dr. De Jesús manages the Mental Health Programs for Creative Corrections. She is a Clinical Psychologist with a specialty in Forensics. Dr. De Jesús joined Creative Corrections after retiring from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) where she served 23 years, the last 13 years as the Chief of Psychology Services, in Miami. Dr. De Jesús, who is from San Juan, Puerto Rico, obtained her B.A. (Social Science) and M.A. (Psychology) from the University of Puerto Rico.

Course Creator

Keith Gibson, Ph.D.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and addiction professionals who seek knowledge about Trauma Informed Approach. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge. This content is at a beginner's level.

  4. Explore how to integrate TIA into a correctional setting.
  5. Provide a training format to implement TIA in a correctional environment.
