About the Course:

Binge eating is prevalent among adolescents from varying socioeconomic backgrounds and is associated with numerous adverse outcomes. However, it remains unclear whether risk factors for binge eating vary by socioeconomic status (SES). The study on which this course is based explores the prevalence of several well-known risk factors for binge eating among a community-based sample of adolescents from Project EAT. Further, the study examines the extent to which the impact of these risk factors on subsequent binge eating differs by SES. It is essential for providers to be cognizant of risk factors and specific SES-related stressors that may differentially impact youth from diverse backgrounds.

Andrea Goldschmidt, PhD

Dr. Goldschmidt is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University. Her research investigates eating behaviors that are associated with poor weight-related outcomes, particularly in pediatric populations and her work utilizes innovative approaches (e.g., laboratory paradigms, ecological momentary assessment, neuroimaging) to understand the etiology and correlates of loss of control, including its association with negative affect. She has published more than 75 articles.

Susan Mason, PhD

Dr. Mason is an Assistant Professor, Division of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of Minnesota. As a social epidemiologist, her research focuses on the population health impacts of adverse and traumatic experiences, including childhood abuse and neglect, sexual violence, racial segregation, and other forms of violence and social marginalization.
