Weight suppression has gained significant attention in the eating disorders field as a meaningful predictor of symptomatology, disorder severity, treatment response, and weight gain. However, its traditional calculation (i.e., as an absolute number of pounds) ignores the potentially important influence of highest past weight from which weight is lost. The purpose of this course is to introduce a novel method of weight suppression (i.e., the relative weight suppression index) that incorporates highest past weight into the calculation. This course also describes the use of absolute weight suppression, the relative weight suppression index, and admission BMI as predictors of treatment weight gain in a sample of women with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The differences between absolute weight suppression and the relative weight suppression index are highlighted and discussed.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Independent and Interacting Effects of Weight Suppression and Admission Body Mass Index on Treatment Weight Change in Patients With Anorexia Nervosa Or Bulimia Nervosa created by Hallie Marie Espel-Huynh, MS et al in 2019.
