This course covers chapters 7 and 8 of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT)/SAMHSA publication entitled Substance Abuse Treatment: Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP 51): Addressing the Specific Needs of Women. Chapter 7 covers specific substance abuse treatment recommendations for female clients, as well as the research supporting the recommendations. Chapter 8 discusses recovery management and administrative considerations. TIP 51 is an in-depth guide that assists providers in offering screening, assessment, and treatment to women living with substance use disorders. This guide reviews gender-specific research and best practices, such as common patterns of initial use and specific treatment issues and strategies to utilize when working with women who use/abuse substances. Specific recommendations are provided to assist clinicians and administrators in developing and maintaining trauma-informed therapeutic healing programs designed to meet the specific needs of female clients.

Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) are developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Each TIP involves the development of topic-specific best-practice guidelines for the prevention and treatment of substance use and mental disorders. TIPs draw on the experience and knowledge of clinical, research, and administrative experts of various forms of treatment and prevention. TIPs are distributed to facilities and individuals across the country. Published TIPs can be accessed at http://store.samhsa.gov.

Anna Hollis, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified school psychologist currently living near Detroit, Michigan. She is licensed as a psychologist in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina) and certified as a school psychologist in in 5 states (South Carolina, Michigan, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Maryland). She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA); the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.

Identify and discuss the gender-specific factors that significantly influence treatment retention of women, and describe women’s specific treatment issues and needs.
Discuss the role of trauma in substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, the use of trauma-informed services, and the provision of integrated treatment for women with trauma-related symptoms and substance use disorders.
Identify and discuss the most critical aspects of recovery management, as well as the benefits of consumer participation in programming, the characteristics of a healing environment for treatment, and the main components of program planning/administration and staff development.
