This course provides a careful description of fundamental methods of child and adolescent psychotherapy that are common to all major theoretical orientations, thus providing readers with a review of the groundwork of therapy. Topics include the therapeutic relationship and how to optimize it, conducting the first session with parents and child, explaining therapy to young children, overcoming resistance, the techniques called reflection of feelings and reflection of meaning, using play and art in therapy, developing simple solutions for simple problems, collaborating with parents and other child-serving organizations, and therapy termination. The course includes a section on Motivational Interviewing, including review of its outcome research and step-by-step instruction in conducting this intervention.
