About the Course

This course provides a careful overview of empirically supported treatments for depression in children and adolescents. The course reviews etiological factors in depression and provides examples of questions therapists can use to assess these factors. The relevant outcome research is summarized in a user-friendly fashion, and the course explains how this research can be integrated with assessment findings to individualize therapy for each client. There is step-by-step instruction in the main cognitive-behavioral techniques for treating depression, including behavioral activation, pleasant event scheduling, cognitive restructuring, and attributional retraining, as well as guidelines for preventing suicide attempts, reducing guilt, strengthening self-esteem, and using psychodynamic and family systems strategies for treating depression . There are case illustrations and numerous examples of good words to say in various clinical situations.

This course is based on chapter 14 of the book, Child and Adolescent Therapy: Science and Art, 2nd Edition created by Jeremy Shapiro in 2015.
