21st Century Neurobehavioral Theories of Decision Making in Addiction-Review and Evaluation

About the Course

This theoretically intensive course examines neurobehavioral theories of addiction and evaluates them against benchmarks. Each theory is explained from inception, various modifications to its current state. The seven main theories discussed are: dopamine-related theories; learning or habit theories; Incentive-Sensitization Theory; Dopamine Imbalance Theory; withdrawal, negative reinforcement, and opponent process theories; strength models of Self Control Failure; Dual Decision System and Dual Decision System-Derived Theories.

This course is based on the article, 21st Century Neurobehavioral Theories of Decision Making in Addiction-Review and Evaluation created by Warren K. Bickel, PhD, et al. in 2018.

Warren K. Bickel, PhD

Dr. Bickel is an accomplished scholar and researcher in addiction and health behavior research. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the 2016 Nathan B. Eddy Award for outstanding research. Dr. Bickel has co-edited five books and published over 350 papers and chapters. His work is frequently cited and receives national and international recognition.

Alexandra M. Mellis, PhD

Dr. Mellis has co-authored 20 articles in peer reviewed journals.

Sarah E. Snider

Dr. Snider is a postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Dr. Warren Bickel. Her PhD is in Pharmacology and Toxicology and she has co-authored four articles.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
