This course address culturally adapted cognitive processing therapy (CPT) in treating American Indians and Alaskan Natives with PTSD, substance misuse and HIV sexual risk behavior. It includes: adaptation of CPT, counselor training and monitoring, PTSD symptoms, alcohol-related problems, alcohol use, substance use disorder, and high-risk sexual behavior.

Cynthia R. Pearson, PhD
Research Associate Professor Cynthia R. Pearson is the Associate Director of the Research Core and Director of the Methods Core at the Interdisciplinary Indigenous Wellness Research Institute, where she collaborates with Indigenous scholars in the development of research policies and directs iterative data analysis on historical and cultural determinants of physical and mental health among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Specifically, Dr. Pearson’s research focuses on the intersecting risk of substance use, historical and lifetime trauma, and HIV risk and how culture, place and community serve as protective factors. She has presented at multiple conferences and has had her work published in several peer reviewed journals.
Debra Kaysen, PhD
Dr. Kaysen’s area of specialty both in research and clinical work is in treatment for those who have experienced traumatic events including treatment of PTSD and related disorders. She has conducted critical studies on treatment of PTSD and/or substance use across a variety of populations and in a variety of settings. Other research conducted by Dr. Kaysen has focused on increasing our understanding of how PTSD and substance use may influence each other. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
David Huh, PhD
Dr. Huh is presently the Director of the Methods Division at the University of Washington (UW) Indigenous Wellness Institute and a Licensed Psychologist in the State of Washington. Dr. Huh is a quantitative and clinical psychologist whose research focuses on advancing quantitative methodology in behavioral health intervention and health disparities research. His areas of research include alcohol use, chronic illness, suicide prevention, and culturally informed intervention with American Indian and Alaska Native communities and other underserved populations. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
