About the Course

This course is based on the book by the same name. This book/course reviews time-effective and cost-effective strategies for helping clients break free of dysregulated behaviors—such as substance abuse, binge eating, compulsive spending, addictive behaviors, and aggression. Mindfulness and modification therapy (MMT) integrates mindfulness practices with elements of other evidence-based approaches. MMT can be used as a stand-alone treatment or as a beginning to more intensive therapy. This book/course reviews general theories, principles, and tips; session implementation guidelines; case examples; and guided mindfulness practices.

This course is based on the Chapter 1-6 of the book, Treating Impulsive, Addictive, and Self-Destructive Behaviors: Mindfulness and Modification Therapy created by Peggilee Wupperman, Ph.D..

Anna Lynn Hollis, Ph.D.

Anna Hollis, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified school psychologist currently living near Detroit, Michigan. She is licensed as a psychologist in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina) and certified as a school psychologist in in 5 states (South Carolina, Michigan, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Maryland). She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA); the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe and discuss the meaning, theories, and research in regard to the term "dysregulated behavior".
  2. Describe and discuss the concepts and principles of Mindfulness and Modification Therapy (MMT).
  3. Describe and discuss MMT's conceptualization of dysregulated behavior and the therapist's stance toward clients with dysregulated behavior.
  4. Define, describe, and discuss the five basic MMT strategies.
  5. Describe and discuss common questions, obstacles, and issues, including addressing specific needs, values, or behaviors of the client; the therapeutic relationship; therapist characteristics and disclosure; and additional issues that may come up inside or outside of sessions.
