This course contains two articles that discuss evidence-based practice, group therapy and mindfulness in substance use disorder treatment. The first article examines evidence-based practice vs treatment—as-usual in group therapy, as well as evidence-based treatment implementation. It includes: treatment modalities and group therapy structure, use of EB practice components and questionable practices, and clinician and organizational factors. The second article discusses mindfulness and acceptance based therapy in the treatment of substance use in their randomized control trial. It includes: mindfulness based treatments for substance use (specifically Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention MBRP), Acceptance-Based Treatments (ACT) for substance use, and integrating mindfulness and acceptance for residential treatment.
This course is based on the article, Group Therapy for Substance Use Disorders: A Survey of Clinician Practices created by Dennis C. Wendt, PhD et al. in 2017 and the article A Randomized Controlled Trial of a Mindfulness and Acceptance Group Therapy for Residential Substance Use Patients created by Ryan C. Shorey, PhD et al. in 2017.
