Complexities With Group Therapy Facilitation in Substance Use Disorder Specialty Treatment Settings

About the Course

This course discusses a study of group therapy to examine the gap in evidence-based therapy and group therapy practice. This qualitative inquiry interviewed several group therapists specializing in substance use disorder treatment at three SUD outpatient clinics. Evidence-based practice was examine and several themes emerged, including: balancing flexibility and structure, necessity of flexibility embedded into existing structures and processes, flexibility emphasized for using manualized therapies, necessity of clinician accommodations and adaptations, complex group dynamics, limited clinician experience and training, reliance on didactic education, limited training, supervision, and quality control, and therapy vs classes.

Dennis C. Wendt, PhD

Dr. Dennis C. Wendt is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University. Dr. Wendt’s research focuses on partnering with Indigenous communities in exploring, developing, and evaluating culturally relevant interventions pertaining to mental health, substance use, and community wellness. He is also interested in evidence-based practice considerations for substance use disorders, as well as philosophical aspects of clinical psychology and research methods. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Joseph P. Gone

Joseph P. Gone, PhD, is a professor of psychology (clinical area) and American culture (Native American studies) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He has published 65 articles and chapters exploring the cultural psychology of self, identity, personhood, and social relations in Indigenous community settings vis-a-vis the mental health professions, with particular attention to therapeutic interventions such as psychotherapy and traditional healing. A fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and of seven divisions within the American Psychological Association, he has served on the editorial boards of seven scientific journals and reviewed manuscripts for more than 70 additional journals in the behavioral and health sciences. A recipient of several fellowships and career awards, he was named a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2014.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
