This course’s article is a review of the applications of ethical principles to behavioral health treatment with LGBTQ+ clients. Case studies of presenting issues of each client and relevant ethical concerns are reviewed and critiqued by the authors. Special attention is given to how treatment can be affected by provider biases and how ethical principles can assist with conceptualizing/treating LGBTQ+ clients.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, Ethical Aspects of Mental Health Care for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-, Pan-, Asexual, and Transgender People: A Case Based Approach created by Timo O. Nieder, PhD and Annette Guldenring in 2020.

Timo O. Nieder, PhD
Timo O. Nieder, PhD, ECPS is head of the outpatient unit for sexual health and transgender care and coordinator teaching at the Institute of Sex Research, Sexual Medicine and Forensic Psychiatry, University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). As a psychologist by teaching, Timo qualified as Associate Professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg. Timo co-founded the Interdisciplinary Transgender Health Care Centre (ITHCCH) at the UKE and co-chairs the German guideline for transgender health care. Timo (co-)authored 45 PubMed-listed research papers and more than 100 publications in total. Timo is board member of the European Professional Association.
Annette Guldenring
A specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, senior physician in the Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics at the Westküstenklinikum in Heide. Active in the transgender movement since 1979, co-editor of the journal EZKU – Journal of Transsexuals for All Terrans – early 80s. Numerous lectures and workshops on the topic of transsexuality/trans identity/gender incongruity. Member of the Department of Sexual Orientations and Identities in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the DGPPN. Co-founder and head of the Round Table Transgender Northern Germany with multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.
Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.
