About the Course

Research on the needs and effective treatment options available to transgender individuals with substance use problems is scarce. This article is a systematic review of the available literature on necessary improvements for substance abuse programs to meet the needs of transgender clients and the effectiveness of substance use programs that are available to meet these needs.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, A Systematic Review of Interventions to Reduce Problematic Substance Use Among Transgender Individuals: created by Tiffany R. Glynn et al in 2017.

Tiffany R. Glynn

Tiffany is a sixth-year graduate student in the Clinical Health Psychology Ph.D. program at the University of Miami (Mentor: Dr. Steve Safren). At UM, she is part of the HPAC lab (Director: Safren) and also collaborates with the UM NIMH funded AIDS Research Center (CHARM; PI: Safren) and the iCARUS lab in the Department of Public Health Sciences (Director: Carrico). She coordinated and served as a clinician on a NIDA-funded R01 multisite randomized clinical trial investigating an HIV-prevention intervention for MSM who use stimulants (Project IMPACT). She has an R36 award from NIDA to examine how the biological, behavioral, psychological, and social factors interact (a “syndemic”) to drive HIV acquisition and transmission risk among transgender women in Miami.

Jacob J. Vandenberg, PhD

Dr Vandenberg is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University. Dr. van den Berg serves as the Program Director of the Brown University AIDS Program and is Key Faculty within the BioBehavioral Sciences Core of the Providence/Boston Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). In addition, he is an Affiliated Scientist with the Yale University Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA) and Co-Leader of the New England HIV Implementation Science Network with CIRA and CFAR. He has published over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify at least three contributing factors to the need for more research into substance abuse treatment programs for transgender individuals
  2. Describe several characteristics of existing treatment programs for transgender individuals that meet the needs of the transgender community
  3. Describe several alternatives to bridge the barriers between the availability of good substance abuse treatment programs and the unique needs of the transgender community with substance use problems
