About the Course

This course is research intensive. This course examines confidence and commitment to change as predictors of moderated drinking. It includes: motivation and self-efficacy as profile factors, daily diary, ecological momentary assessment, a person-centered approach, moderation through controlled drinking, motivational interviewing, spirit only motivational interviewing, self change, coping, demographics and other characteristics, and prediction of drinking outcomes. This course is research intensive.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Profiles of Confidence and Commitment to Change As Predictors of Moderated Drinking: A Person-centered Approach created by Alexis Kuerbis, LCSW, Ph.D.et al. in 2015.

Alexis Kuerbis, LCSW, Ph.D.

Dr. Kuerbis is Assistant Professor at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She is a substance abuse specialist with more than 20 years experience in a variety of clinical, public health and social services settings. Her research focuses on special populations struggling with substance use disorders, particularly problem drinkers, including women on welfare involved in the child welfare system, the GLBT community, and older adults. In addition, she has dedicated much of her research to examining the mechanisms of behavior change among the problem drinkers, using mobile technology. She has more than 100 works published in peer reviewed journals.

Stephen Armeli, PhD

Dr. Armeli is a Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University. His main area of research focuses on the dynamic processes related to substance use within the context of the stress and coping process. Much of this work entails modeling the within-person associations among daily negative events, coping strategies, affective states, and health-related behaviors (e.g., alcohol consumption) as they unfold in everyday life, and how these processes vary as a function of relevant individual difference factors. He has published more than 100 works in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

  1. Acknowledge moderation as a viable treatment outcome.
  2. Identify consistent predictors of successful moderation.
  3. Summarize most of the change that occurred to moderate drinking.
