About the Course

This course examines the efficacy of using EMDR to treat addiction such as food craving and cigarette craving with mental imagery and working memory taxation to lessen triggers in addiction memory. It includes: the effects of eye movement on food imagery and food craving and the effects of eye movement on smoking related memories and cigarette craving.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Desensitizing Addiction-Using Eye Movements to Reduce the Intensity of Substance-Related Mental Imagery and Craving created by Marianne Little, PhD, et al. in 2016.

Marianne Little, PhD

Dr. Little is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychology, Erasmus University Rotterdamn, Netherlands. Her research has foucsed on EMDR and she has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.

Marcel A. Van Den Hout , PhD

Dr. Van Der Hout is a Professor at Utrecht University. His researach focuses on EMDR and he has had mutliple works published in peer reviewed journals.

Iris M. Engelhard, PhD

Iris Engelhard is Full Professor in Clinical Psychology at Utrecht University since 2008 and director of the Experimental Psychopathology lab Utrecht. For over 10 years, she has been leading an innovative research program that tackles academic and clinical questions on the topics of posttraumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders. Her research has made a unique contribution to the understanding of the etiology and treatment of these disorders, using novel, rigorous experimental and prospective methods, and a translational approach where basic cognitive science is in the service of applied research that seeks to improve mental health. he has over 200 scientific publications. She teaches in the Clinical Psychology and Research Master SHP programs at Utrecht University and in the postdoctoral Health Psychology program at RINO Zuid.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Acknowledge that EMDR is effective in PTSD and can reduce the richness of sensory memory and make emotion less intense, thus making it applicable to the treatment of addiction.
  2. Identify the relationship between working memory and eye movement.
  3. Summarize the outcomes of both study one and study two and how they can be applied to the treatment addiction.
