Depressive Symptoms in the Elderly- An Early Symptom of Dementia? A Systematic Review

About the Course

Depression and dementia are common incapacitating diseases in old age. The exact nature of the relationship between these conditions remains unclear, and multiple explanations have been suggested: depressive symptoms may be a risk factor for, a prodromal symptom of, or a coincidental finding in dementia. They may even be unrelated or only connected through common risk factors. Multiple studies so far have provided conflicting results. The objective of this review is to determine whether a systematic literature review can clarify the nature of the relation between depressive symptoms and dementia. Methods, results, and conclusions are presented.

Wietse Wiels, MD

Dr. Wiels is a neurologist affiliated with the Department of Neurology, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, Brussels, Belgium and the Center for Neurosciences (C4N), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium. He is particularly interested in movement disorders (such as Parkinson's or Huntington's Disease), functional or 'psychogenic' symptoms and neuropsychiatry, palliative care and Evidence Based Medicine (EBM). He also researches depression and dementia.

Chris Baeken, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Baeken is a psychiatrist whose main interests are within the neurobiological field of Affective Disorders affiliated with the Center for Neurosciences (C4N), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium and the Department of Psychiatry, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, Brussels, Belgium (among other affiliations). He utilizes brain-imaging paradigms (MRI, fMRI, (S)PET,….) with or without the combination of neuromodulation techniques, such as rTMS and tDCS to gain more insight in the underlying mechanisms of emotional brain processes in the ‘healthy’ as well as in the ‘mentally affected’ human brain

Sebastiaan Engelborghs, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Engelborghs is full professor of neurosciences and neurochemistry at University of Antwerp and director of the Reference Center of Biological Markers of Dementia (BIODEM) at Institute Born-Bunge/ University of Antwerp. He as well is full professor of neurology and neurosciences at VUB, co-director of the VUB Center for Neurosciences (C4N) and chair of the department of neurology of the VUB university hospital, UZ Brussel. Sebastiaan Engelborghs is board certified in clinical neurology (2001) and neurological revalidation medicine (2009). Both clinically and with regard to research, he is specialized in neurodegenerative brain disorders that cause dementia.

Elizabeth Mosco, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in Reno, NV. She opened a private practice after 10 years of conducting home-based assessment and therapy with the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System. Dr. Mosco’s clinical interests include maternal mental health, older adults, and third wave cognitive behavioral therapies.
