About the Course

This course describes a systematic review of protective factors is essential for highlighting resilience and formulating potential interventions for suicide among AI/AN populations. Trends in protective factors will be discussed as well as strengths and weaknesses of the studies analyzed. Future directions for research will also be suggested.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Attempted Suicide in American Indian and Alaska Native Populations: created by Andrea Wiglesworth, MA et al. in 2022.

Andrea Wiglesworth, MA

Andrea is a graduate student whose research focuses on the relationship between forms of stress (e.g. minority stress in Native American populations, chronic stressors such as poverty, and childhood maltreatment) and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in childhood and adolescence. She examines neurobiological and psychophysiological mechanisms that may inform how these constructs are related. Andrea has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.

Little Dove F. Rey, Psy.D

Little Dove F. Rey is an indigenous psychologist whose research has focused on suicide and substance abuse in the AI/AN community. She has had several works published in peer reviewed journals.

Course Creator

David M. Lutkemeier

David Lutkemeier holds a BA degree in psychology, a master’s degree in developmental psychology, and a doctorate degree from the University of Cincinnati in Special Education and Psychology. He is certified as a psychologist by the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners, as well as holding public school superintendent certification in Arizona and California. Dr. Lutkemeier has worked as an assistant professor at Arizona State University, a school psychologist, special education director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent in both Arizona and California. David, working as a consultant with a national curriculum management group (CMSi) has completed over two dozen comprehensive district-wide curriculum audits in 15 states over the past 20 years and has worked as a test developer for CE Learning Systems for the past ten years.

  1. Discuss ways that American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) populations contend with disproportionately high rates of suicide.
  2. Describe how protective factors play a role in resilience and in suggesting possible interventions for suicide.
  3. State challenges and recommendations to foster success for tribal communities, organizations, and researchers seeking to develop culturally‐grounded health promotion programs.
