About the Course

This is a research intensive course. In this article, the authors examine the current state of dissemination and implementation science for substance use disorder interventions among Indigenous communities and identified best-practice substance use disorder implementation approaches.

Katherine A. Hirchak,PhD. MHPA

Dr. Hirchak is an Assistant Research Professor Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine and the PRISM Collaborative at WSU. Her research focus is on harnessing technology to better engage young, native adults in treatment and substance-free activities. She has published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals.

Oladunni Oluwoye, PhD

Dr. Oluwoye is researcher and assistant professor at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University. Oluwoye focuses on a new area of research in the U.S. that advocates for early intervention for young people dealing with psychosis. She has multiple articles published in peer reviewed journals.

David M. Lutkemeier

David Lutkemeier holds a BA degree in psychology, a master’s degree in developmental psychology, and a doctorate degree from the University of Cincinnati in Special Education and Psychology. He is certified as a psychologist by the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners, as well as holding public school superintendent certification in Arizona and California. Dr. Lutkemeier has worked as an assistant professor at Arizona State University, a school psychologist, special education director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent in both Arizona and California. David, working as a consultant with a national curriculum management group (CMSi) has completed over two dozen comprehensive district-wide curriculum audits in 15 states over the past 20 years and has worked as a test developer for CE Learning Systems for the past ten years.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the current state of dissemination and implementation science regarding substance use disorder intervention among Indigenous communities.
  2. Identify best practice substance abuse disorder approaches as implemented among Indigenous communities.
  3. Discuss the value of prioritizing Indigenous methods to Western treatments and frameworks in order to improve substance use disorder treatment outcomes.
