Therapist Self-disclosure, Countertransference, and Self Care in the Current Work Environment

About the Course

This webinar addresses the therapist’s responsibility with regard to ethical practice and cultural competency ensuring patient welfare in all aspects of practice. Participants will learn about (1) Recognizing and properly handling countertransference issues, (2) The three types of self-disclosure and their effects on the therapy relationship, (3) Recognizing the importance of therapist self-care (4) Handling countertransference, therapist self-disclosure, and therapist self-care to improve the therapeutic alliance and increase therapist effectiveness. Literature updates, along with relevant Codes of Ethics and current expert opinion will be included in all areas of discussion. This program reviews the current research findings and knowledge that inform ethical and legal practice.

Dr. Pamela Harmell, Ph. D. is a national lecturer specializing in legal and ethical issues in clinical practice. She is a Professor at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology and has written extensively in professional publications on ethical practice and has formally studied law. She is the Past President of the Board of Psychology. Dr. Harmell is the former Chair of the California State Ethics Committee and former Chair of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association Ethics Committee. She served on the Board of Directors of the California Psychological Association and is Past President of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for intermediate and above levels of knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe and utilize three self-care techniques with regards to being a psychotherapist.
  2. List and describe the three types of therapists self-disclosures, how each is used in therapy sessions and how clients view therapists self-disclosure by their therapists.
  3. Describe how to recognize and handle the three types of countertransference and properly deal with the personal reactions to clients.
