About the Course

This book introduces EMDR-DeprEnd, a novel, research-based approach for treating depressive disorders. An elaboration on standard EMDR, this method has proven to be as effective or more effective than other guideline-based therapies, including CBT, particularly for chronic and recurrent depression. The text provides protocols and scripts for EMDR-trained therapists, developed by an international research team with 12 years of experience in the field. It explains depression as a stress- and trauma-based disorder and offers strategies for treating clients with co-occurring trauma-based disorders who don’t respond well to current treatments. The book includes case studies, special techniques like integrating drawing into reprocessing, and insights into the neurological basis of the approach. It addresses various types of depression, including recurrent depression. The authors have conducted five controlled clinical studies and treated over 800 depressive clients using this method.

Arne Hofmann, MD, PhD

Arne Hofmann, MD, PhD, is a specialist in psychosomatic and internal medicine, director of the EMDR Institute, and senior physician of the Gezeiten Haus Clinic for Psychosomatics, Psychotraumatology, and EMDR in Schloss Eichholz (Wesseling). He introduced the EMDR method in Germany in 1991 and is co-founder and honorary member of the German-speaking professional society for psychotraumatology (DeGPT) and the professional societies for EMDR Europe and EMDRIA Germany. He researches and teaches internationally in the field of treatment of trauma sequelae and depression. He has been awarded international prizes and the Federal Cross of Merit for his work. Luca Ostacoli, MD, is a psychiatrist. He is professor of clinical psychology at the University of Turin, Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences, School of Medicine and Surgery; head of the Clinical and Psychosomatic Psychology Service at S. Luigi Hospital (Orbassano, Turin, from 2001 to 2016); on the Clinical Obstetric Gynecological Psychology Service (from 2016 to present); and on the Psychotraumatology and Health Staff Support ­Service (City of Health and Science Hospital of Turin from 2019 to present). He is a member of the International Research Consortia and author of numerous scientific publications in the field of trauma-focused interventions, EMDR, and Mindfulness and their neurobiological correlates. He is a psychotherapist with body dynamics training. He is an EMDR Supervisor and Trainer in Clinical Mindfulness and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and conducts training seminars on psychotherapy. In 2018, he was awarded the EMDR International Association Award and in 2019 the Francine Shapiro Award from EMDR Europe. Maria Lehnung, PhD, is a psychological psychotherapist, did research at the University of Kiel with a neurobiological focus, and is now in private practice with a psychotraumatological focus. In addition, she is active as a lecturer and supervisor and EMDR Europe trainer. From the beginning of her work with EMDR, she was fascinated by the procedure and its possibilities and interested in finding creative ways of using EMDR even with difficult clients. For years she has been involved in the scientific research of EMDR therapy and was instrumental in developing the concept of treating depression with EMDR.

Michael Hase, MD, PhD

Michael Hase, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist and director of the Lüneburg Center for Stress Medicine. After his training in neurology and psychiatry, he worked as a senior physician at the Psychiatric Hospital in Lüneburg in Lower Saxony State, where he established the treatment focus on psychotraumatology. He then headed departments for psychosomatic rehabilitation and psychotherapy in Hamburg and Bad Bevensen and is the head physician of the rehabilitation clinic Therapeutischer Hof Toppenstedt. Alongside Arne Hofmann, Hase provided decisive impetus for starting research into depression treatment with EMDR therapy. He teaches and publishes internationally and was awarded the 2018 Outstanding Research Award by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) professional society for his work. Marilyn Luber, PhD, is a licensed, clinical psychologist in private practice in Philadelphia. She was on the Founding Board of Directors of EMDRIA and a member of the EMDR Task Force for Dissociative Disorders. She has conducted training both nationally and internationally and is a co-facilitator for the EMDR Global Alliance. She is on the Steering Committee for the Future of EMDR Therapy Project, on the Council of Scholars, and chair of the “What Is EMDR?” working group. She received HAP’s Humanitarian Services Award (1997), Outstanding Contribution to EMDRIA Award (2003), and EMDRIA’s Francine ­Shapiro Award (2005). In 2001, HAP published a handbook for EMDR Clients translated into eight languages. She edited seven books for Springer’s EMDR Scripted Protocol series. She co-authored Dr. Shapiro’s 2009 interview for the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research and wrote Dr. Shapiro’s 2015 entry for E. S. Neukrug’s The SAGE Encyclopedia of Theory in Counseling and Psychotherapy. Robert Yourell, LMFT

Robert is an LMFT and EAP certiifed clinician with over 20 years of experience. He was trained in EMDR by Francine Shapiro in 1992 and holds Level 1 and 2 EMDR certifications. He produced the first sound (UpLevel) widely used as bilateral stimulation.

  4. Outline the nature of memory in depression etiology with attention to the traumatic and “little t” challenges that can lead to depression.
  5. Name the fundamentals of the EMDR DeprEnd protocol for depression as an approach to memory processing
  6. Describe the steps of DeprEnd treatment and distinguish it from the standard protocol.
  7. Summarize the application of the approach to the key concepts, including episode triggers, belief systems, depressive and suicidal states, and relapse prevention.
  8. Restate the special challenges posed by comorbidities such as complex PTSD and dissociation and protocols for handling them.
  9. Outline the EMDR-drawing integration protocol and how it assists treatment, including reprocessing.
  10. Contrast the issues of bipolar disorder treatment with conditions previously discussed.
  11. Recognize the general status of research on depression and comorbidities presented.
  12. Describe the symptom event map for assessment, treatment planning and treatment.
