The health risks of smoking are clear, and market and regulatory efforts have led to the rise of smokeless, heated, and vaping nicotine products. Since smoking-related diseases are caused by tobacco combustion and nicotine addiction keeps people using tobacco, understanding nicotine addiction’s biology and behavior is key to improving treatments. This review covers the latest research on treating nicotine addiction, especially from cigarettes, and discusses effective methods for adult smokers and policies to prevent youth nicotine use, highlighting new areas for future research.
