The article “Structural Racism and Reflections from Latinx Heavy Drinkers: Impact on Mental Health and Alcohol Use” explores the relationship between structural racism and its effects on mental health and alcohol consumption within the Latinx community. Through qualitative interviews with Latinx heavy drinkers, the study reveals how systemic inequalities and racial discrimination contribute to stress, anxiety, and depression, which in turn lead to increased alcohol use as a coping mechanism. The findings highlight the need for culturally sensitive mental health and substance abuse interventions that address the underlying issues of racism and discrimination to effectively support the Latinx population.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, Structural Racism and Reflections from Latinx Heavy Drinkers: Impact on Mental Health and Alcohol Use created by Christina S. Lee, Ph.D. et al in 2021.
