The article presents the findings of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) that tested the efficacy of harm reduction treatment for alcohol (HaRT-A) among people experiencing homelessness and alcohol use disorder (AUD). The study compared the outcomes of participants receiving HaRT-A to a control group receiving services as usual over a three-month period. The results demonstrated that HaRT-A participants showed significant reductions in peak alcohol use, alcohol-related harm, AUD symptoms, and positive alcohol tests, although there were no significant improvements in quality of life (QoL).

Dr. Susan E. Collins is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. She specializes in harm reduction and addiction treatment research, focusing on community-based interventions for people experiencing homelessness. Dr. Seema L. Clifasefi
Dr. Seema L. Clifasefi is an associate professor at the University of Washington's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She has expertise in public health, with a particular focus on harm reduction approaches and the intersection of mental health, substance use, and homelessness. This is her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Allison Brown holds a BS degree in Criminal Justice with a Psychology focus and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently works at a Long-Term Insurance company bringing clinical experience to claim processes. Additionally, she developed and continues to lead the Continuing Education Program for Social Workers and Nurses and often leads complex process improvement projects Prior to this, her primary focus was in mental health and worked in both the outpatient and inpatient settings providing support to adults with mental illness.
