This study is a randomized controlled trial that examines the effectiveness of Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) in reducing criminal recidivism risk among justice-involved adults receiving mental health residential treatment. The intervention aims to address criminogenic needs, specifically criminal thinking and criminal associations, through cognitive-behavioral strategies in a group setting. The study compared outcomes for participants receiving usual care versus usual care plus MRT over 6- and 12-month follow-ups, with primary outcomes focused on recidivism predictors. Findings indicated that MRT did not significantly outperform usual care in reducing criminal recidivism among the population studied, highlighting the challenges of engaging this group in intensive interventions.

Dr. Michael A. Cucciare is affiliated with the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He is an expert in mental health outcomes research, with a focus on veteran populations. This is his first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Allison Brown holds a BS degree in Criminal Justice with a Psychology focus and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently works at a Long-Term Insurance company bringing clinical experience to claim processes. Additionally, she developed and continues to lead the Continuing Education Program for Social Workers and Nurses and often leads complex process improvement projects Prior to this, her primary focus was in mental health and worked in both the outpatient and inpatient settings providing support to adults with mental illness.
