The Role of Incarceration As a Risk Factor for Cognitive Impairment

This course was updated 9 days ago. If you're about to take the exam, you may benefit from reviewing the exam questions listed below before starting on the actual exam.

About the Course

The study examines the association between incarceration and cognitive decline in middle-aged individuals, particularly among formerly incarcerated individuals (FI) compared to non-incarcerated (NI) counterparts. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, the study evaluates the cognitive impacts of prior incarceration through the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS-m) scores. The findings reveal that FI individuals have significantly higher odds of cognitive impairment and dementia, explained largely by disparities in education and early cognitive ability, supporting the cognitive reserve hypothesis.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Role of Incarceration As a Risk Factor for Cognitive Impairment created by Dr. Robynn J. A. Cox et al in 2022.
