This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of psychological interventions in reducing PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other mental health outcomes among first responders such as police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. The study synthesizes data from 15 studies, highlighting that clinician-delivered interventions and CBT-based approaches are significantly more effective for reducing PTSD symptoms compared to other methods. The findings also suggest that increasing the number of intervention sessions enhances effectiveness, while stress reduction outcomes remain inconsistent. The study underscores the need for high-quality research to improve intervention design and delivery for first responders.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Effectiveness of Psychological Interventions for Reducing PTSD and Psychological Distress in First Responders created by Khalid M Alshahrani, PhD et al in 2022.
