J. Kevin Thompson, Ph.D. and Linda Smolak, Ph.D.

Dr. Thompson received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Georgia in 1982. He has been on the faculty of the University of South Florida since 1985, where he was promoted to Full Professor in 1995. He has published four books on eating disorders, body image, and obesity, along with over 60 journal articles and 10 book chapters on these topics. His current research interests revolve around the measurement of risk for body image problems and eating disturbances with a focus on sociocultural factors and interpersonal experiences, especially teasing. Dr. Thompson is also developing a measure of media-related influences on body image.

Dr. Smolak earned her B.A. at Temple University in 1973. After obtaining her Ph.D. at Temple University in 1980, she began teaching Developmental Psychology at Kenyon College . Currently she is Professor of Psychology and Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at Kenyon College . Dr. Smolak has published on body image and eating disorders. Her research interests involve the effects of sexual harassment in the school environment on body image, eating problems, and depression, as well as the way in which social conceptualizations of gender shape a child’s environment and lead to pronounced gender differences in rates and types of eating and body image problems. Dr. Smolak has also served as a consultant to the McKnight Risk Factor Study, the Harvard Eating Disorders Center, and the Office on Women’s Health (U.S. D.H.H.S.).
